Teaching assistants and higher level teaching assistants
Teaching assistants play a vital role in how children learn, and demand for good ones does not let up. The vacancies we handle range from emergency and day-to-day cover through to short term, long term and permanent posts.
The work varies more than people expect. You might be supporting a teacher with a full class, working with a small group, or providing one-to-one support for a specific child. It can be genuinely rewarding, and it is often the route people take into teaching itself.
SEN and one-to-one support
A large part of what we do is SEN. That includes one-to-one support in mainstream schools and work in specialist settings. It asks a lot of you, and schools rightly expect experience or a real willingness to learn, but the consultants placing you have seen the settings themselves and will be honest about what a role involves.

Supporting the class teacher across a full class, in any key stage, full or part time.

Supporting a specific child in mainstream, or working in a specialist SEN provision.

Do I need a qualification to be a teaching assistant?
Not always, though many schools prefer a Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and it widens what we can offer you. Relevant experience with children matters just as much.
I have no experience. Can I still register?
We advise working on a voluntary basis first. We look for three to six months of experience in a setting where you are working with children aged 0 to 16, then come and talk to us.
Can I work as a teaching assistant part time?
Yes. Plenty of our teaching assistant placements are part time, from half a day a week upwards. You tell us the days you want.
What is the difference between a TA and an HLTA?
A higher level teaching assistant holds the HLTA status and takes on greater responsibility, including covering whole classes. HLTA roles usually pay more and we recruit for both.
